Ballet Barres For The Home Ballet Schools
Kansas City Ballet leaps across the street

Four burly movers hoisted the Kansas City Ballet's last piano onto a dolly and rolled it down the empty hallway.

It was one of the last items left in the cavernous building at 1601 Broadway, formerly home of National Cash Register, now abandoned and doomed to the wrecking ball.

Across the street, the Ballet's new temporary home at 1616 Broadway was pinging with activity, as staffers arranged offices, movers rolled pianos off a truck and carpenters screwed ballet barres onto the walls of the four 1,900-square-foot studios.

That was Monday morning. In a few hours Kansas City Ballet School students would show up for their first classes in the spacious new studios.

"They said they'd be done by 4:30, and I'm sure they will be," said school director Tenley Taylor, standing in the new building's half-completed Broadway entrance.

Ballet beckons for Port Perry boy this summer

At least it has for 13-year-old Jamie Nix. The Royal Academy of Dance ballet student at Port Perry Dance Academy has been accepted into the summer school program at the National Ballet School, chosen from young people across Canada.

And it all started a mere four years ago when Jamie started asking his parents to put him into dance classes.

"He's got such a love for dance and is totally committed," said his mom Cathy. "We're just in awe. He's only been dancing for four years. He pushed us. We started taking him to Celtic festivals."

He loved the dancing and took the workshops offered at festivals. Then he began pushing for real lessons.

"When he was nine, I said fine," she said. "We took him just to satisfy his desire for tap. He pushed himself to the limit.

Coppelia

Theater doesn't have to be all drab and gloomy. The recent ballet production of Coppelia was a joyous show, with people dancing up out of their seats. With beautiful music and exquisitite dancing, this is the reason that ballet should be enjoyed.

Coppelia
Empire Theatre, Liverpool

If you ever needed to explain the pleasures of ballet, you could do no better than take them to this production of Coppelia.

They would enjoy the fun, revel in the music of Leo Delibes, have pleasure in the sumptuous costumes and be intrigued by the magical story.

Above all, they would appreciate the wonderful dancing of the Russian Classical Ballet Theatre and especially that of Kristina Terentieva, the principal ballerina.
