NEW JERSEY TROUPES BUILD STATE'S DANCE REPUTATION

South Orange resident Lydia Johnson leads one of those small New Jersey dance troupes that has helped make the Garden State known as a laboratory for up-and-comers. In the case of Johnson's 8-year-old company, Lydia Johnson Dance, those who have seen the troupe praise the way this dancemaker is taking classical ballet and reworking the technique into something a bit out of the ordinary.

Lydia Johnson Dance will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the South Orange Performing Arts Center, where it is the company in residence. The center, which just opened this season, is at 1 SOPAC Way in South Orange, on South Orange Avenue. Tickets are $35, $10 for students and seniors. For information, call (973) 313-2787 or go online at www.sopacnow.org.

American Repertory Ballet artistic director Graham Lustig is another New Jersey-based dancemaker helping to put New Jersey on the map as a haven for choreographers.

Grace a ballet school

THOSE who have thought about joining a dance or ballet school but have dismissed the idea and said No, not for me. Not graceful enough. Too old. Too stiff, but wished deep down that they really would like to try... why not?

Its never too late to experience the fun and enjoyment of discovering balance and movement said ballet school principal Lin Jewell.

Lin Jewells School of Ballet may be just the place to bring out that inner you by assisting you to gain confidence, self-esteem and good posture.

Ballet gives students of all ages from tiny tots to mature age adults, male and female, the feeling of being able to move with more freedom, said Lin.

It also enables them to express and explore their capabilities and creativity in a gentle and enjoyable way.
